Wells Fargo offers several different types of checking accounts that meet customer needs. Checking accounts exist for those needing the very basics, those wanting a plethora of additional benefits and features, and those with poor or no credit. The process for opening a Wells Fargo checking account follows the same basic steps for each type of account.
Step 1: Choose Method for Opening
Wells Fargo allows you to open a new checking account online. Click on the "Open Now" link that corresponds to the type of checking account you want to open. You also can open a checking account by calling 1-800-869-3557 or visiting your local Wells Fargo branch. You can find the nearest branch using the locator tool. The Opportunity, Teen and Student checking accounts only can be opened in person at a branch.

Tip
If you prefer to open the account at a branch and don't want to wait in line, you can set up an appointment online.
Step 2: Fill Out the Application
The application asks for personal information such as name, address, phone number and email address, as well as your date of birth, citizenship status and employment status. You'll also provide your driver's license or ID number and Social Security number. When opening a joint account, you'll need the same information and documentation for your co-applicant.
Tip
If you're currently a Wells Fargo customer and applying online, you can sign into your account. The website then automatically fills in your application information from your other account.
Step 3: Fund the Account
Each type of account has a minimum opening deposit of $50. To fund the account online you can:
- Transfer from an existing Wells Fargo account
- Transfer from an outside account by providing the routing and account number of the outside account
- Use a credit card
When applying over the phone or in-person, in the addition to the above you can send the deposit by mail or bring in a check or money order.
